5 Conditions That Can Be Improved by Wearing Custom Orthotics

Your feet are anatomical marvels for their size — the small appendages are responsible for carrying your entire body through life. When an issue occurs with your feet, no matter how small, the impact can bring your life to a standstill.

A great way to provide extra support for your feet is with custom orthotics designed specifically for your feet, health, and goals.

To give you an idea of some of the many conditions that can benefit from tailored support, our team at Neuhaus Foot and Ankle presents five for which we routinely recommend custom orthotics.

1. Foot and ankle arthritis

If you’ve developed arthritis in your feet or ankles, mobility can come at a cost — namely, pain and inflammation. If walking has become uncomfortable or unbearable, we can design orthotic inserts for your footwear to relieve the pain.

First, we identify where in your foot or ankle you have symptoms and design the orthotics to support those areas — typically by taking pressure off them.

2. Diabetes complications in the feet

If you have diabetes, you are at risk for foot complications. In fact, up to 60% of people with diabetes develop nerve damage (neuropathy) in their feet, often leading to foot ulcers.

As part of our comprehensive diabetic foot care services, we recommend custom orthotics to support your feet and prevent nerve damage.

3. Bursitis

Your body contains many bursae — tiny, fluid-filled sacs that keep your bones from rubbing. Some of these sacs are in your feet. When they become inflamed, the condition is called bursitis.

Bursitis in the feet is painful, especially in the ball of your foot. With custom orthotics, we can take the pressure off of that area, so you don’t continue aggravating the bursa sac.

4. Bunions and hammertoes

Foot problems like bunions and hammertoes are progressive and usually stem from poor footwear choices that upset the balance in the structures of your feet.

If you see hammertoes or bunions developing, you can slow the progression with improved footwear and custom inserts.

5. Plantar fasciitis

Your plantar fascia is a tough band of tissue that stretches the length of the bottom of your foot, providing support for your arches. When the tissue becomes inflamed, it can lead to the significant foot and heel pain that are the hallmarks of plantar fasciitis, which sends two million people in the United States to seek treatment each year.

With custom orthotics, we can better support your plantar fascia, giving it time to heal and preventing the problem from recurring.

Of course, there are individualized treatments for each of the conditions we reviewed above, but clearly, custom orthotics play an invaluable role in supporting these efforts and your feet.

To give your feet the gift of customized orthotics, please contact one of our offices in Hermitage, Brentwood, Nashville, Mount Juliet, Waverly, Smyrna, Gallatin, Columbia, Pulaski, Hendersonville, or Lebanon, Tennessee, to schedule an appointment.

Are Plantar Warts Cause for Concern?

As the expression, “Pebble in your shoe,” illustrates, even the smallest problem in your feet can feel significant since you’re on your feet a lot. This often applies to plantar warts, which are more nuisance than danger.
