Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics – also called orthoses – are insoles placed inside your shoes and worn to correct foot and ankle problems. The most common type of orthotics are arch supports, but other types include foot pads, shoe inserts, and ankle braces.

The type of orthotics your doctor recommends will be based on the condition of your foot and ankle, any symptoms you experience, foot injuries or conditions you may have, and the type of shoes you’ll use with your orthotics.

Most orthotics can be placed inside athletic shoes or dress shoes, though special types of orthotics are also available for flat and heeled women’s dress shoes and even sandals.

How do orthotics work?

Orthotics provide support and cushion to your feet while relieving pressure on problem areas. Depending on the type of orthotics your doctor recommends, the ultimate goal is to create a stable surface to support all the movements of your foot – whether walking, standing, or running.

Orthotics contour to your feet so you get support where you need it and cushion for painful or troublesome areas. Orthotics can also address foot deformities by creating a level surface so you can stand on both feet evenly.

Why are orthotics used?

Anyone with foot or ankle problems can benefit from orthotics. Some common uses for orthotics include:

  • Support for flat feet or high arches
  • Heel cups for heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Braces to relieve arthritis pain
  • Pads for bunions, hammertoes, corns, and calluses
  • Leg length discrepancies
  • Healing from injuries, including sprains, strains, and fractures
  • Preventing or reducing discomfort when exercising

No matter the cause of your discomfort or your condition, your doctor at Neuhaus Foot & Ankle can help relieve your symptoms with over-the-counter and custom orthotics.

What types of orthotics are available?

At Neuhaus Foot & Ankle, the doctors offer over-the-counter and custom orthotics. Premade orthotics from Powerstep® offer comprehensive foot support and cushion for most common complaints. Powerstep also offers unique solutions – like orthotics for sandals and slippers – so you’ll always have the support you need.

Custom orthotics are also available for more complex or unique conditions. Customization allows your doctor to create an orthotic that will fit your foot exactly – contouring to the curves and arches of your foot – without putting uncomfortable pressure on painful areas.

Orthotics can help you get back on your feet without pain or discomfort. Call or schedule a consultation at Neuhaus Foot & Ankle today to learn more.
