Understanding gait and walking problems and your options.
Gait is the way you walk. A gait problem means your steps look or feel different from usual, such as limping, dragging a foot, or turning the feet in or out. The cause may be in the foot, but it can also come from the leg, hip, back, or nerves.
Changes in walking can raise the chance of falls and pain. Looking into the cause early can help you stay active and steady.

Diagnosis and care
How we treat gait and walking problems.
Step 1 · Diagnosis
We watch you walk, stand, and turn, and we look at the shape and strength of your feet and legs. X-rays can show bone or joint problems, and MRI or ultrasound may be used for soft tissue. If we suspect a nerve or other medical cause, we may refer you for more testing.
Step 2 · Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. Custom orthotics, braces, and supportive shoes can improve how your foot moves. Physical therapy builds strength and balance. Treating foot pain or sores at the source often helps your walking as well.
If a deformity or joint problem is behind the gait change, surgery may be an option to relieve pain and improve motion. Many people improve with non-surgical care.
Recovery
What to expect over time.
Some people notice better steps within a few weeks of new shoes or inserts. Others need a few months, especially if strength or nerve issues are involved.
When to book
Do not wait it out.
See a podiatrist if your walking changes without a clear reason or if you trip or fall more often. Seek urgent care if a sudden change comes with weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking.
